[Press Release] 8th Annual Wear Red Road Races for Military Families Takes Place April 16

Summary: The 8th annual Wear Red Road Race (WR3) takes place April 16 at HMCS Queen Charlotte.

(CHARLOTTETOWN PE) APRIL 6, 2016 – Members of the public are invited to lace up, don red, and show support for Canadian Armed Forces members and their families. In partnership with the Charlottetown Running Room, ParaSport and Recreation PEI, and HMCS Queen Charlotte, the annual Wear Red Road Race takes place on April 16 and raises funds for the PEI Military Family Resource Centre (PEI MFRC).

This is the eight year for the WR3 Road Race, which will be held at the HMCS Queen Charlotte and includes a 5K race/walk, a 10K race/walk, and a half-marathon. There will also be a free kids’ run (100m) as part of the event for children ages six and under. In an effort to honour injured veterans, in 2012, WR3 made history by being the first established road race in PEI to include those with physical disabilities.

Started in 2008 by a group of runners wanting a half-marathon race to participate in this time of the year, the Wear Red Road Races gets its name from a national initiative to wear red in support of the Canadian military. (More than just a colour, RED is an acronym for Remember Everyone Deployed.)

The founding objectives of the WR3 are still valid today: (1) demonstrate public support for PEI’s (and Canada’s) servicemen and servicewomen, (2) raise discretionary funding for the work of the PEI MFRC, and (3) help promote physical fitness in PEI.

All spectators, volunteers, AWDs, and runners involved in WR3 are asked to wear red. Those who register through the Running Room will receive a red WR3 race shirt.

Donna Earl, Executive Director of the PEI MFRC is pleased to be the recipient of the funds raised during this year’s WR3. She states, “Last year, we had to move the WR3 from PEIR (Prince Edward Island Regiment) to HMCS Queen Charlotte due to higher registration numbers. We’re beyond thrilled to see such an increased support for the Canadian Armed Forces. We have the great honour of being an organization that serves the families of the men and women who serve our country, and we can’t do this without monetary support. We thank everyone for supporting this fundraiser.”

Registration fees are $35 for the 5K and 10K and $60 for the half-marathon. There is no charge for the kids’ fun run.
